  • City is under UNESCO World Heritage protection since 1979
  • The Bay of Boka is the only fiord on Mediterranean and it is on the list of the 25 most beautiful fiords in the world
  • There are archaeological sites and pre-historical drawings on the walls of the caves (800 years B.C.) in caves near Risan
  • There are 4.5 km long walls surrounding the city. There are 3 entrances to the Old Town: the west, the south and the north door
  • St. Tryphon's Cathedral was built in 1166, 69 years before the Paris church Notre Dame
  • In 1997, the Bay of Kotor was put on the list of the 28 most beautiful bays in the world
  • Town Risan, near Kotor, dates back to the middle of 3rd century B.C. and it is considered the oldest town in the Bay of Boka. In one of the palaces there is a mosaic representing God Hipnos (God of the dreams) and it is believed to be the only mosaic representation of  that God in the world

 History 

  • The city was founded as a Greek colony in 3rd century B.C.
  • In the middle of 2nd century it has been invaded by the Romans
  • Since 5th century it is a part of the Byzantine empire
  • Since 12th until 14th century it belonged to Serbia
  • During the 15th through 18th  centuries it was ruled by the Republic of Venice
  • It has been under the Austrian authority at the end of the 18th, during the 19th century, and on the beginning of the 20th century. There were also periods of Russian and French rule during this time.
  • In World War I, Kotor was the site of some of the fiercest battles between local Montenegrin Slavs, and Austria-Hungary. After 1918, Kotor became a part of Yugoslavia and known as Kotor. After 1945, it became a part of the then Socialist Republic of Montenegro within Yugoslavia's second incarnation.
